- Dozens of Russian soldiers in Ukraine could face trial.
- No one can predict how long this war will last: Zelensky
Kyiv: Ukraine’s military claimed on Saturday that Russia was withdrawing its troops from Kharkiv, its second largest city. At the same time, Ukraine said that Russia is now engaged in a fight for the occupation of the eastern region. Ukraine’s General Staff said Russian troops were withdrawing from the northeastern city of Kharkiv and were now focusing their attention on protecting the supply route. He said the Russian army launched mortars, artillery as well as air strikes in the eastern Donetsk area to “target Ukrainian troops and destroy their barricades.”
‘Ukraine entering a new era of protracted war’
Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksey Reznikov said: “Ukraine is entering a new era of protracted war.” Ukraine’s top prosecutor has opened a war crime trial against Russian soldiers, in which dozens of soldiers could face trial. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainians were doing their “maximum” effort to expel the invaders. He also said that the outcome of the war would depend on cooperation from Europe and other partners. ‘No one can predict how long this war will last,’ Zelensky said.
Both sides don’t seem to be getting any major success.
Ukraine is quite aggressive in the Donbass. It is an industrial area of eastern Ukraine. Village-to-village fighting is taking place in these areas and both the sides do not seem to be getting any major success. After failing to capture Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, Russian forces decided to focus on the Donbass region, but are finding it difficult to make ground advances here as well. Zelensky claimed that the Ukrainian army had gained an edge and had captured six Ukrainian towns or villages in the past day.
‘Russia has not made any major strategic advances recently’
Western officials said Ukraine had pushed Russian troops back from Kharkiv, a key target of Moscow. “Russian troops haven’t made any major strategic advances recently,” said a Western official. An official, keeping his identity a secret, said: “Ukrainians are continuing to retaliate around Kherson and Kharkiv. We are expecting it to be a long battle. The head of the Ukrainian army for Luhansk in the Donbass region said on Friday that his troops were in full control of the city of Rubizne, which has a population of about 55,000.
