Train guards of Indian Railways will now be called ‘Train Managers’. However, their work and pay scale will remain the same. This information has been given in an official order. Officials said there was a long-standing demand of the railway employees’ unions to change the designation of the guard in charge of safe operation of the train.
In an order, the Railway Board has issued instructions to give a new name to the guard as ‘Train Manager’. The Assistant Guard has been named as ‘Assistant Passenger Train Manager’ and the Senior Passenger Guard as ‘Senior Passenger Train Manager’.
A letter related to this has been sent by the Railway Board to the General Managers of all the zones of the Railways and has been asked to implement it immediately. This order has also been shared on the official Twitter handle of the Railways.

Railway employees were demanding to change the designation of the guard since 2004. The reasoning behind this was that the job of the guard is not just to show the flag and torch for the signal. According to the order of the Railways, now Senior Passenger Guard – Senior Passenger Train Manager. Assistant Guard will now be Assistant Passenger Train Manager while Goods Guard will now be called Goods Train Manager, Senior Goods Guard will now be called Senior Goods Train Manager and Mail/Express Guard will now be called Mail/Express Train Manager.
