The government’s top medical expert on COVID has claimed that the reported infection numbers are “nowhere close to the truth” as the actual number could be 90 times higher than the number of Omicron infections being reported. Dr. Jayaprakash Muliyal, epidemiologist and chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Institute of Epidemiology at the Indian Council of Medical Research, said, “After the delta wave, the surge in cases is Omicron, whichever way you test or its Verify, no verification required here.”

He said, “What we need to worry about is the shape of the curve. When the graph starts falling, we will know it has reached the end.”
Asked how experts would be able to measure Omicron’s true range without more tests and exact numbers, he said that “we’ve learned to live with it” because even during the second wave caused by the delta variant, he said “always the numbers.” This is multiplied by about 30 to get the actual number of cases, as the subclinical numbers go unnoticed, including the infected person.
