UPSC Success Story: Cracking the UPSC exam is considered difficult. In such a situation, if a person is 100% blind, then it seems impossible to pass this exam. But Beno Zephine from Chennai made this impossible journey possible and secured 343rd rank in UPSC exam in 2014. Today he is an IFS (Indian Foreign Service) officer.
Beno Zeffin was sharp in studies since childhood. His father was a railway employee and mother was a housewife. There was a healthy atmosphere in the house regarding his studies and the family members also supported him a lot. No one ever made him realize that he had a problem. This had a positive effect on Beno Jeffine and he did his schooling from Little Flower Convent Higher Secondary School in Chennai and graduated from Stella Maris College. Beno did his post graduation from Loyla College.
Beno wanted to join the civil service from the time of school and did her preparation by reading books written in Braille script. Apart from this, by listening to the subjects on the Internet, they knew and understood them.
Beno’s family helped him a lot and his mother used to read newspapers to him. His father used to find and bring books written in Braille script for him.
Beno had cleared the civil services exam in 2013-14 but due to his blindness, joining duty became a big challenge. He was to be appointed to the post of IFS officer according to the rank of 343, but his joining stayed for a year. However, in the year 2015, he was given an appointment in the Ministry of External Affairs. She is the first blind officer to have got this position in the State Department.
Beno says don’t think about what people think about you, just keep doing your work with full dedication.
